Iron Fist In A Velvet Glove

Your first decent ride on an FZ1 should be enough to convince you that in an era of great motorcycles, this model stands out like Rossi at a club track day. Sure, having an engine derived from the most famous litre Supersport of the modern era was a jump start, but it’s what Yamaha’s engineers have done with that platform that makes the FZ1 a jewel among sportbike designs.

SMOOTH TORQUER

Torque-tuned specifically for the road, the FZ1 engine is mated to a light and rigid aluminium frame, sculpted with the perfect quotients of torsional, lateral and vertical stiffness.

The outcome is pure class. Engine response… with forgiveness. Chassis agility… with stability.

Whether your choice is faired (S model) or naked (N model) the FZ1 fits… like a glove.

FZ1’s 998cc DOHC 20-valve engine is a torque-tuned R1-based engine, with a power spread sculpted for tremendous mid-range punch and massive top-end power.
Fuel injection with computer-controlled sub-throttle valves provides precise fuel/air mixture for superb power delivery across the entire rev range. Closed-deck cylinder block provides great strength while allowing a narrow engine in spite of big, 77mm bores.
Narrow-angle five-valve combustion chambers produce a highly efficient 11.5:1 compression ratio, while big valves and high-lift cams flow plenty of air.  Carburised connecting rods with fracture split big ends produce a quick-revving engine with excellent high-rpm durability.
High silicon-content ceramic-composite cylinder sleeves ensure great heat dissipation for consistent power delivery and reduced friction.
Four-into-one, chamberless short-style exhaust contains stainless steel EXUP and three-way catalyst with O2 sensor for low emissions and outstanding power delivery throughout the rev range.
Light, R1-spec five-spoke wheels and fat radial tyres, including a 190/50-ZR17 rear serve up plenty of traction.
Aggressive ergos: 18-litre fuel tank moves the rider forward into a position of total control—supersport-like 51 percent front wheel weight bias means confident, quick handling.
43mm fully adjustable inverted fork contains compression damping circuitry in the left leg and rebound in the right — proven effective on the YZR-M1 MotoGP bike — as well as stiffer springs for excellent handling.
Controlled fill die-cast truss rear arm provides optimum lateral stability, minimises drive chain reaction …and looks the business too.
Twin 320mm front discs squeezed by monobloc four-piston calliper provide supersport level front end performance.
